No boxes were physically harmed in the making of this comparison.

You’ll find that all pictures on this site are pictures of actual boxes in our collection. Some are not in our primary location yet, but pictures and descriptions will be added soon.

We believe we have every version of the Second Edition base game of Carcassonne in the German language. If you are not sure which box you have, have a look below or contact us and we’ll be able to tell you!

First printing

2014

The first printing of the C2 artwork saw something old and something new. The front cover art was completely new, provided by Chris Quilliams. This viewing angle of the city of Carcassonne can be found on the walls of the old city, although the ledge where the figures stand, as well as the viewing point of the player, are not there.

The back of the box very closely resembles the back of the latest printings of the first edition. The example landscape is the same, although now with the new C2 tiles.

This printing also introduced something new for the German releases: 2 mini-expansions are included in the box. On the front of the box, we see that both the River, as well as a brand new mini-expansion called the Abbot, are included. The Spiel des Jahres logo of course is shown prominently, as well as a shield showing over 10 million games and expansions sold worldwide!

Second printing

2019

The second printing of the C2 game saw a few minor changes on the front of the box. The SdJ logo was moved and made smaller, and the shield is now a banner, showing over 12 million games and expansions sold.

On the back of the box, a bigger change occurred. No longer with a dark blue background, this back design shows a less busy design, with a larger example landscape.
